Moan Red first picked up the guitar at the age of 14. A few years later he teamed up with some musicians in his local area of West London, U.K., to form Doveton Sturdee. The band was named after Sir Frederick Charles Doveton Sturdee.

Around the same period that Moan Red began playing guitar, he caught a group called Chrome Slug performing on the British T.V. show The Word. He thought the band played really well and was pleasantly surprised when he met their bass player years later. He recruited the former “Slug” for his second band, Sheriff.

Next up, Moan Red started to develop his solo show. It was around this time that he befriended a band called Guttercrush, who had a great knack for putting on exhilarating live shows. “Moan” and “The Crush” often attended each other’s performances; bolstering a new movement in the capital’s musical underground. One night Moan Red and Guttercrush played together at Infinity, in Mayfair.

With an intrigue for the city that spawned The Doors, Jane’s Addiction and Guns ‘n’ Roses, Moan Red relocated to Los Angeles. One of Moan Red’s early live performances in Southern California took place at a location in Echo Park known as Timbre Space. The show was recorded on video and the footage was later featured on Moan Red: The Early Years Part One.
